Therapy Services
Therapy services may be provided only as reasonable and necessary for symptom control or to enable the patient to maintain activities of daily living and basic functional skills in accordance with the hospice philosophy. These services must be approved by the hospice interdisciplinary group and may not be appropriate for all hospice patients.
How Hospice Therapy Services Work
-
Therapy in hospice is approached differently from rehabilitation programs primarily focused on restoring function or pursuing curative goals.
-
Physical therapy may address safe movement, positioning, mobility, or comfort-related functional concerns.
-
Occupational therapy may focus on helping patients manage appropriate daily activities and adapt to changing abilities.
-
Speech-language services may address communication or swallowing-related needs when appropriate.
-
The hospice team determines whether therapy is appropriate based on the patient’s condition, goals, and individualized plan of care.
