Bereavement Support
Hospice continues to provide bereavement support to grieving families, and all members of the family are eligible to receive bereavement services for a period of 13 months following the patient’s death. Services may include grief support and education, support groups, phone calls, and individual visits (as desired by the bereaved family) by the medical social services professional or spiritual counselor. For needs that exceed the scope of hospice bereavement services, referrals to other organizations and professionals within the community are available.
How Bereavement Services Work
-
Bereavement support is tailored to the needs of the family and may continue after the patient’s death according to the hospice program’s established approach.
-
Hospice staff can help families prepare emotionally for expected loss while the patient is receiving care.
-
After a death, bereavement support can provide an opportunity to discuss grief and adjustment.
-
The type and timing of support depend on the family’s needs and the hospice program’s bereavement process.
-
When additional support is appropriate, the hospice team can help families identify other community or professional resources.
